The BikeErg is a piece of home gym equipment that stands out from the rest. It is the latest addition to the family of sports-based ergometers from Concept 2. Following in the wake of their indoor water rowers and SkiErgs. The name ergometer means ‘work measurer’ in ancient Greek and this is exactly what this unique piece of equipment does.
What is more, unlike most home exercise bikes, this equipment effectively has a clutch and gears, replicating the road riding experience and making it as lifelike as possible. When you stop pedalling on this machine, the wheels will keep spinning.
When fully assembled, this exercise bike takes up a floorspace of 122cm by 61cm and comes in at an overall weight of 26kg.
At this low weight, the equipment is easy to move from place to place. The maximum user weight for the BikeErg is 136kg, which comes in at just over 21 stone. The seat height is fully customisable, ranging from 79 to 103cm high, making it ideal for users of all shapes and sizes. The handlebar is also customisable, with the ability to move them both up and down and forward and back.
You also have the option to fully customise your ride, with the option to use your own saddle, handlebars, and pedals.
With the same flywheel as Concept 2 rowers and SkiErgs, you are ensured a smooth, predictable ride throughout your workout. It puts you in full control of both your exertion levels and resistance. The bike has a ‘damper.’ Opening this will let more air into the flywheel and emulates the feel of shifting into a higher gear. Closing the damper has the opposite effect and it will feel like you are changing down.
The BikeErg does not have a chain. This machine uses high strength polygroove belts, which makes for a quieter ride than usual. The belts are also self-tensioning, which ensures their life is extended and a low level of maintenance.
This home exercise bike features both Bluetooth and ANT+ wireless connectivity. This allows it to connect to a range of fitness devices such as a heart rate monitor and popular apps. Once such app is Concept 2’s own app which tracks your workout. This will synchronise with your own fitness on devices such as Apple and Android phones and tablets.
The Concept 2 performance monitor gives you instant workout feedback as you go. On the display you can enjoy a wide range of different workouts and you can choose from modes allowing you to focus on exactly what is right for you. The monitor is calibrated, ensuring you can compare your data with other users accurately.
The reviews for this original bike from Concept 2 are generally glowing. One user stated that the bike was ‘smooth, solid, and more comfortable than almost any other ex bike I’ve used.’
It is also said to be easy to put together and easy to program. One user, who owns an assault bike, bought this model for his wife, but now uses it himself and does more cardio on the back of it, and best of all, he says that people are noticing.
Value for money has been mentioned more than a few times, which is impressive for this mid-range bike.
This is certainly a stand-out home exercise bike. With the damper in place, you are offered a hugely different ride to normal, replicating hitting the open roads. The BikeErg is as solid as they come – and comes from a brand which is trusted by millions. Add the Bluetooth and app connectivity as well as the informative and customisable display, and you have an exercise bike that ticks all the right boxes.
